Using social media to engage with students – Discovering Futures conference, 16th June 2011

University marketing managers are meeting to discuss the advantages and potential pitfalls of using social media to communicate with students at a conference in London on 16th June.

The event organised by higher education consultants, Discovering Futures, will allow marketers to share their experiences with each other, including a session from The Student Room’s Marketing Director, Jamie O’Connell.

Additionally the day will feature case studies from universities in the UK and Overseas, brand building in China, using Twitter in alumni relations and reaching diverse audiences when recruiting students.

Social media research and keynote speaker, Dr Lizzie Jackson, says

“Universities need to understand how and why young people use social media or they could end up alienating rather than engaging them. Communication must be an equal, two-way conversation. In these challenging times, social media can be an invaluable tool for targeting potential students and widening participation.”
