Top undergraduates recognised for excellence

TARGETjobs ‘Undergraduate of the Year Awards’ were presented to a dozen of the UK’s brightest students. The 5200 entrants were shortlisted to 120, who were all present at the award ceremony, which crowned the winners on Friday the 13th April.  This competition does well in improving the profile of employability skills on campus as well as giving recognition to outstanding undergraduates.

Michael Portillo awarded these students at the East Windergarden in London’s Docklands in the third year of the awards, which encourages academic departments to find their most outstanding undergraduates; one way of evaluating students was by identifying the CVs which contain the best combination of academic and personal skills.

The difficult four-stage application progress, which included interviews, assessments and questions from category sponsors, which whittled down entrants into 10 per category totalling 120. 39 different universities were represented, around a third from non-Russell Group institutions.

The winners were awarded opportunities such as internships or placements from sponsoring firms, many international, as well as prizes such as laptops and sports tickets.

The winners were as follows:

Accountancy & finance: Shabbir Merali (UCL, economics)
Arts & humanities: Rosa O’Rourke (Royal Holloway, history)
Business & finance: Peter Murdoch (Loughborough, accounting & financial management)
Construction engineering & design: Ollie Brooks (Swansea, civil engineering)
Engineering: Bryony Smith (Durham, general engineering)
First-year: Roberta Kovacs (Edinburgh, economics)
Future business leader: Vyacheslav Polonski (LSE, management – managerial economics & strategy)
IT & Computer science: Torgyn Shaikhina (Warwick, computer & information engineering)
Law: Robin Morris (Sheffield, law – European & international)
Low carbon: Declan Bryans (Strathclyde, applied chemistry & chemical engineering)
Management: Grace Gimson (Birmingham, business management)
Social sciences: Laura Scott (Loughborough, history & international relations)
