As mobile phones become an increasingly prominent extension of young people’s arms is the time is up for watches as a time telling tool.
Do you use a watch or mobile phone to tell the time? has attracted a lot of response from students as they discuss the reasons why they do or don’t wear a watch with a divided opinion of 50.5% preferring mobile phones and 49.5% favouring watches. However some of those that prefer to check their mobile still admit to wearing a watch but the reasons are for fashion not function and many say that the watches they wear don’t actually work.
Some of the reasons why students prefer their mobile phone are that they’re “watch no longer works”, “to get the precise time”, “at night” and because they always have their phone to hand.
And for watches “as a fashion accessory”, “because they’re sophisticated”, “enjoyment of wearing one” and for many it’s out of habit and something they have been doing since as young as 6.
It would appear that how students tell the time is based on habits with a lot of those who use a mobile doing so because their watch has run out of battery. They still wear it but their habits have changed to check their phone for the time and the watch’s primary function is as a fashion accessory. Meanwhile those that continue to use a watch do so because they have been doing it from a young age and the habit of wearing a watch and using it daily means that they are likely to continue doing so for many years to come.
For watch manufacturers and retailers this presents a clear message, to get young people wearing a watch from an early age, ensure that they last long enough for students to rely on them and make it easy for them to repair and replace dead battery’s so that they don’t seek alternatives like a mobile phone.
